Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) is a species belonging to the subfamily Vaccionioideae (or Arbutoideae depending on the author). This sub-family of evergreen bushes, with leaves similar to the ones of laurel, belongs to the family Ericaceae. The subfamily Vaccionioideae is widespread throughout the world. The Strawberry tree was already known and used in ancient times. The Strawberry tree fruits are consumed fresh, although they are most often used to produce marmalade, jams and syrups as well as to prepare cakes and pastries. On Corsica and Sardinia, they are used for the production of wine with 9-10% alcohol and distilled drinks similar to brandy. The species is poorly studied.
The results of the nutritional value of the fruit and the antimicrobial activity of the extracts will be available for the duration of the project.
