The activities of the Science and Research Centre of the University of Primorska (UP ZRS) are strongly interdisciplinary, with a mixture of humanistic, social and natural sciences with an emphasis on examining the topics of the Mediterranean and the upper Adriatic area in comparison with the Middle-European and especially the entire area of Slovenia. The mission of the UP ZRS is to actively contribute to the development of a society of knowledge with science-by-research, professional and educational work. In the last twenty years of research in the field of olive growing a group of top experts and researchers from the field of food chemistry, agronomy and genetics has been formed within the ZRS and later within the UP ZRS.
In 2013, the Institute for Olive Growing was founded at UP ZRS, with the department of agronomy, genetics and plant biotechnology (OAGRB), the department of Chemistry and Food Science (OKŽ) and with an infrastructure unit of an accredited (www.gov.si/sa/ No. LP-040), internationally certified http://www.internationaloliveoil.org and in the European metrology system involved Laboratory for oil testing (LPO) http://www.euramet.org/index.php?id=members&cc=si.

The newly formed Institute will try to upgrade the work within the framework of professional tasks, basic, applied and numerous European projects in the field of morphology, genetics and the protection of Mediterranean cultures and of chemical characterization of foods.  The Institute is also integrated in the university education of UP FAMNIT and UP FVZ.
